expert reaction to the IPCC AR5 Synthesis Report

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the UN has released its fifth assessment report on the current scientific knowledge around climate change.

Prof Chris Rapley, Professor of Climate Science at UCL, said:

“For those people who take the time and effort to read this compelling synthesis, the message will surely be crystal clear. We have a problem and we need to address it. Serious and informed public discourse is required to decide the future we we want. The meeting of 195 governments in Paris next year to achieve credible, fair and legally binding carbon emissions commitments, if successful, will be a step in the right direction. But in the end it is not politicians or pundits who will deliver that future; it is the engineers, technologists, and entrepreneurs who will roll out cheap clean energy that will make fossil fuels redundant, so that their reserves stay in the ground where they belong, not the atmosphere where they don’t.”
