expert reaction to the discharging from hospital of the British volunteer nurse who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone

A British nurse who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone and was treated in the UK has been released from hospital.

Dr Alain Kohl, MRC Programme Leader, MRC University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, said:

“This is fantastic news, but it also shows that with suitable general treatment of the symptoms of Ebola (e.g. treatment for dehydration), infected patients have a better chance of survival (we don’t know whether ZMapp was responsible for this patient’s recovery). We must step up efforts to improve general healthcare in the regions affected by the current outbreak but also in other regions that are at risk.”
