expert reaction to British man contracting Ebola

A 29 year old British man contracted Ebola after working as a volunteer nurse in Sierra Leone.

Prof Paul R Hunter, Professor of Health Protection, The Norwich School of Medicine, University of East Anglia, said:

“That a member of staff employed by the World Health Organization has contracted Ebola was probably inevitable. It is well known that health care workers are at particular risk from Ebola when caring for affected patients. Although robust infection control procedures are very effective at limiting spread, it is often very difficult in developing countries to vigorously manage such infection risk. Nevertheless this outbreak will not be controlled unless doctors, nurses and other health care professionals are prepared to care for affected patients and communities. I personally have a huge amount of respect for all those health care staff working in affected areas, especially those who volunteered knowing the risks. Without their efforts many more people would die.”
