Following a 6-month inquiry, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics published a report on the ethics of new techniques that aim to prevent the transmission of inherited mitochondrial DNA disorders.
New variations of IVF techniques are being developed that aim to replace damaged mitochondrial DNA, though these techniques are not currently permitted for treatment under UK legislation.
Published during an open public consultation the Nuffield report sets out the ethical considerations arising from the possible use of these techniques for treatment in the future.
