Non-invasive prenatal testing for disorders such as Down’s syndrome has considerable advantages over invasive methods, not least in that it reduces the risk of miscarriage. But how effective is it? Is it feasible economically? Do parents trust it? How far can it be applied? Can it diagnose disease in the mother as well as the foetus? To whom should it be offered?
The SMC gathered some of the leading speakers who will be presenting on this subject at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics (Glasgow, June 6-9) to brief journalists on all aspects of the technique.
Speakers:
Prof. Lyn Chitty, Professor of Genetics and Fetal Medicine, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK
Dr Suzanne Drury, translational research and development scientist, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK
Prof. Joris Vermeesch, Head of the Laboratory for Cytogenetics and Genome Research, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium
