experts react to research to be presented at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR)

The research included an investigation into environmental and chemical risk factors for autism, presented as an abstract at the conference.

Richard Mills, Director of Research, Research Autism, said:

“Dr Hertz Picoitto’s investigation of risk factors in autism explores the relationship between pet shampoo and the development of autism. Autistic disorders are complex and it is not possible to isolate specific causes or risk factors on the basis of such evidence. Much more investment is needed to develop a comprehensive programme of research into the causes and treatments of autism. This will include systematic studies of the brain, genetics, environmental and health factors as well as initiating research into the most effective ways of helping those currently living with the condition to improve their life opportunities.”

Professor Tony Charman, University College London Institute of Child Health, and Chair of IMFAR 2008, said:

“What’s interesting about Dr Hertz Picciotto’s research is its focus on possible environmental factors, like pesticides found in pet shampoos, that in combination with genetic factors, may work together to cause some cases of autism. This particular finding is still preliminary and is yet to be published. This kind of systematic research may identify potential risk factors which can then be tested in epidemiological studies and, if proven correct, we can act on them. The International Meeting For Autism Research (IMFAR) brings together over one thousand of the world’s leading autism experts to share their newest findings.”
