A study published in the Lancet Public Health looks at oral nicotine pouch use in Great Britain.
Prof Peter Hajek, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Health and Lifestyle Research Unit, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), said:
“The study shows that the use of nicotine pouches remains low overall (1% in 2025), but that they are used increasingly by smokers as a quitting aid. The usefulness of the pouches as a stop smoking aid is not yet known, but their good safety profile and their ability to provide some of the effects that smokers seek from cigarettes make them a promising alternative that could help to speed up the eradication of smoking-related death and disease.”
‘Oral nicotine pouch use in Great Britain: a repeat cross-sectional study, 2020–25’ by Harry Tattan-Birch et al. was published in Lancet Public Health at 23.30 UK time on Tuesday 16 December 2025.
