At a cancer conference, an unpublished study was announced which found that mice were at increased risk of developing cancer after consuming the artificial sweetener sucralose.
Professor Julian Peto of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said:
“This is highly irresponsible. The report, which has not been published in any peer-reviewed journal, appears to be an attempt to start a media scare about a widely used product. Soffritti’s previous claim that aspartame, another sweetener, is carcinogenic has been widely refuted, and in 2010 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) halted assessments based on data from his Ramazzini Institute.”
