The International Olympic Committee (IOC) have announced the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics until 2021.
Dr Michael Head, Senior Research Fellow in Global Health, University of Southampton, said:
“It’s no surprise to see the Olympics postponed and it’s absolutely the right decision. It’s very clear that COVID-19 will be a serious public health problem for at the very least many more weeks and probably months. The Olympics are a vast occasion where hundreds of thousands of individuals from all around the world gather in one city over a short period of time. Transmission during the Olympics, and afterwards as the audience and athletes head home, would have been incredibly likely and would be dangerous to public health response efforts.”
