It was announced that the Greater Manchester region is due to be put under Tier 3 COVID restrictions from Friday 23rd October.
Dr Shaun Fitzgerald FREng, Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge, said:
“This is a difficult situation. One might ask whether this is right, but similarly one could ask whether it will be sufficient to bring the R below 1 and whether it is soon enough. What we know is that things are not looking good at the moment and that we need to do something to help the NHS cope. An overwhelmed NHS, which will then mean people not getting the treatment they need (not just Covid related), is something we must avoid.”
