expert reaction to latest numbers of deaths from COVID-19

On Thursday 26th March, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) confirmed that 578 people have now died from COVID-19 in the UK, an increase of 115 from the previous day.

Jim Naismith, FRS FRSE FMedSci , Rosalind Franklin Institute and Oxford University, said:

“Today’s numbers represent 115  heartbreaking events for the loved ones left behind. They do not represent a failure of social distancing. We know from other countries and the work of the Imperial group that these measures, when obeyed, will be effective. We also know that it can take around two weeks for the effect of these policies to show up in the figures.”
