A joint BMJ and ITV investigation published in the BMJ reports that long COVID patients have travelled abroad for expensive and experimental “blood washing”.
Prof Fergus Gleeson, Professor of Radiology, University of Oxford, & CI on the EXPLAIN2 study, said:
“The treatment of patients with Long COVID outside of a clinical trial is of concern.
“We are currently unable to objectively diagnose and provide quantitative data on Long COVID severity and measures of disease response. Treatment without these objective measures is difficult. How best to measure Long COVID response is important to be able to best identify effective treatments, how long they should be administered, their duration etc.
“A number of NIHR funded studies are looking into objective and quantitive measures/markers of Long COVID, which will help then identify potentially effective treatments. One recent early publication from the NIHR funded EXPLAIN trial, has recently been supported by a paper published from Canada, with similar results.”
