According to Diabetes UK, type II diabetes and its complications costs the NHS over £1m an hour.
The largest and longest-running study of its kind on type II diabetes, the SABRE study began following 5,000 people in 1988. Twenty years on the researchers followed up with the participants, the final data was collected in 2011 and the results, published in Diabetes Care, were presented at the SMC.
