Avian Flu – UK’s worst ever outbreak – what does the science say

In partnership with DEFRA and the Animal Health Plant Agency, we invited journalists to a background briefing on Avian Influenza.

The UK and the rest of Europe are experiencing the most significant outbreak of avian flu ever recorded. The United Kingdom has had 190 cases confirmed since late October 2021.

Journalists dialled in to hear from an expert panel who were able to outline the science behind the spread of avian flu, the reasons for the increasing virulence of the disease, and the vital role of biosecurity in protecting flocks.

Speakers included:

Dr Christine Middlemiss, UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer

Dr Andy Paterson, Head of the APHA National Emergency Epidemiology Group

Professor Paul Digard, Chair of Virology at the Roslin Institute, The University of Edinburgh and member of the FluMap consortium
