a vaccination against high blood pressure

The Science Media Centre found an expert to comment on the possibility of using immunisation to control blood pressure, as suggested by a paper in the Lancet.

Dr Tim Chico, Clinician Scientist, University of Sheffield, said:

“Most patients dislike taking tablets for high blood pressure, and would welcome an alternative. Immunisation is an innovative and exciting prospect, and this paper shows that it is effective for several weeks. The challenge is to achieve good reduction of blood pressure by immunisation without side effects, and show that this reduces heart attacks and strokes as much as conventional medicines.”
