Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland report on Emerging Food Innovations in the UK

The food landscape is changing, with cell cultivated meat, edible insects and even 3D food printing becoming more of a reality than ever before.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) exist to ensure that consumers can be sure that the food they eat is safe and what it says it is. ‘Emerging Food Innovations in the UK’ is a new report being released on Friday 13th March. It identifies the innovative food technologies most likely to reach UK consumers within 15 years and provides the clearest picture to date of how cutting-edge food production systems are evolving, and what this means for regulation.

While the main purpose of the report is to help companies to plan long-term research, manufacturing and investment strategies,  the SMC thinks it will also be of interest to journalists and the public. The report also includes consumer opinions and evidence collected through focus groups and surveys, ensuring that regulatory planning reflects the questions and concerns that matter most to the public.

The report has been produced by the Market Authorisation Innovation Research Programme (IRP), a programme jointly delivered by the FSA and FSS and funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT)

The SMC has invited the FSA to explain their work in this area and what it means for businesses and the wider public over the next 5-15 years.

Speakers will include:

Dr Thomas Vincent, Deputy Director of Innovation at the FSA

Dr Joshua Ravenhill, Head of Cell-Cultivated Product Sandbox Programme at the FSA
