The State of Wildfires report takes stock of extreme wildfires of the 2024-2025 fire season – including the Los Angeles disaster as well as extensive burning in the Pantanal wetlands and Amazon in South America, and the Congo. It explains how climate and land use change influenced the extent of the world’s major fires and assesses whether events could have been predicted.
The report also evaluated how the risk of similar events will change in future under different climate change scenarios.
This is the second report in an annual series. It was co-led by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), the University of East Anglia, the UK Met Office and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
Speakers included:
Dr Douglas Kelley, Land surface modeller at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology
Dr Matthew Jones, Senior Research Fellow at the University of East Anglia
Dr Francesca Di Giuseppe, Principal Scientist, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts
