report from independent panel investigating the North-East England crustaceans incident

In late September 2021, large numbers of dead crustaceans began to wash up on the North-East coast of England.

The SMC was asked to host a briefing by Defra’s Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) Professor Gideon Henderson, who has convened an independent panel of scientists who have been assessing all of the evidence and explanations for the sea life mortality. Prof Henderson was joined by another two members of the independent panel.

Speakers will include:

Prof Gideon Henderson, Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA), Defra (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs)

Prof Crispin Halsall, Professor of Environmental Organic Chemistry, Lancaster University

Dr Tammy Horton, Research Scientist, National Oceanography Centre

This briefing was accompanied by an SMC Roundup of Comments.
