The science behind Environmental land management schemes (ELMS)

Recently the UK government has announced a review of schemes that aim to improve the environment such as the Environmental land management schemes (ELMS), triggering a strong reaction from some environmental charities.

  • But what are ELMS?
  • What is the science behind ELMS?
  • What does the current scientific evidence say about ELMS impact on nature?
  • And what does the scientific evidence suggest might happen if ELMS are restricted or withdrawn?

We along with the British Ecological Society (BES) brought together a panel of scientists who can answer some of journalists questions relating to this topic.

There wasn’t any new data to present at this briefing, but was an opportunity for journalists to hear about the science behind ELMS and ask any questions.

Speakers included:

Dr Lisa Norton, Senior Scientist, UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH)

Dr Nicola Randall, Principal Lecturer, Harper Adams University

Dr Jennifer Dodsworth, Research Associate, University of Sheffield
