expert reaction to latest dashboard death numbers involving COVID-19, as published on the government dashboard

A comment from Professor Paul Hunter on the latest figures on the DHSC COVID-19 Dashboard.

Prof Paul Hunter, Professor in Medicine, UEA, said:

“Today’s high death numbers are so high because they include a lot of deaths that would normally have been reported yesterday but because of the bank holiday they were delayed.  Adding yesterday to today’s figures there were 257 deaths this week compared to 323 the same two days last week.  Looking at the 7 day running total to today there 739 deaths reported which is actually 4 deaths down on the previous 7 day period.  Prior to this week end we were seeing a growth in the number of deaths reported in the UK of a little over 10% per week.

“Focussing just on England there were 516 deaths reported in the 7 day period ending today compared to 538 in the previous 7 day period, a 4% decline, though we need to wait a few more days before the impact of the bank holiday disappears to get a clear understanding of any trend.”
