meet the scientist appointed to advise government on ethnicity and COVID and hear about the Government’s first quarterly report on COVID disparities

Dr Raghib Ali is Senior Clinical Research Associate, MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge and he, along with Professor Keith Neal, Emeritus Professor of epidemiology of infectious diseases at the University of Nottingham, will be announced this week as the Government’s new expert advisers on COVID and ethnicity.

The SMC has invited Dr Ali met science journalists and briefed them on the Government’s first quarterly report on progress to address COVID health inequalities, with particular reference to ethnicity. Dr Ali explained how our understanding of risk factors have improved since PHE’s report in June; describe the action government has taken to date and outline future steps to address disparities. This work was presented to the Prime Minister by the Equalities Minister, Kemi Badenoch, who will also update the House of Commons on progress described in the report on Thursday 22 October.
