expert reaction to latest figures on COVID-19 deaths in England

NHS England have released the latest figure for reported deaths in hospitals in England – an additional 352 deaths since yesterday, bringing the total to 20,483.

 

Prof Carl Heneghan and Dr Jason Oke, Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine and Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford, said:

“Here’s the link for today’s update

COVID-19: Death Data in England – Update 1st May

“Today’s reported figure is 352 deaths in hospitals in England.

“For comparison on the same day of the week:

  • 24th of April: 587 deaths were reported in hospitals in England.
  • 17th of April: 738 deaths were reported in hospitals in England.
  • 10th April:  866 deaths were reported in hospitals in England

“We’ve also put together a page on:

COVID-19: Hospital Admissions and Care Home Outbreaks

“Data from care homes reported by gov.uk shows that 4,516 (29.1%) care homes out of 15,517 in England have reported a suspected or confirmed outbreak of COVID-19 up to 21st April.

By region, the most outbreaks have occurred in the South East (n =841), and the greatest proportion in the North East (38.1%).”
