expert reaction to Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s comments on what measures the UK is considering in response to COVID-19

The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, commented on the measures the UK is considering in response to COVID-19 on The BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, and Sky News.

Prof Mark Woolhouse, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, University of Edinburgh, said:

“The UK is considering implementing social distancing measures such as school closures, restrictions on mass gatherings and working from home. Such interventions are intended to slow down the spread of COVID-19. It is sensible to consider these options and they may turn out to be necessary. If they are then it is extremely important that there is a well thought out exit strategy. We need to decide not only the circumstances that make it is appropriate to introduce a given social distancing measure but also the circumstances that would make it appropriate to remove it.”
