expert reaction to IVF and ICSI success rate in men over 50

Research presented in an abstract at the 35th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) shows that paternal age of over 50 reduces success rates of IVF and ICSI.

Prof Ying Cheong, Professor of Reproductive Medicine and Honorary Consultant in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, University of Southampton, said:

“This study again highlights that men are not immune to the impact of biological ageing as far as their fertility is concern, although this detrimental impact arrives later than women.”

* The abstract ‘Paternal age over 50 years reduces success of IVF/ICSI’ by Guy Morris et al. will be presented at the 35th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) on Wednesday 26 June. The embargo is 13.30 UK time.
