launch of the revised implementation guidance on Plan S

In September 2018, cOAlition S, an international group of research funders announced Plan S, an initiative to accelerate the transition to full and immediate Open Access to research publications. The 10 principles of Plan S aim to address a simple fact: in the 21st century no science should be locked behind paywalls.

The Plan S principles have been met with strong support as a bold and brave step to unlock knowledge. There has also has been wide debate on the project in the research community. Following a public feedback exercise that ran from November 2018 to February 2019, designed to gather input from the wider scientific community in a structured way, cOAlition S is ready to reveal its revised implementation guidance. Feedback prompted cOAlition S members to go back and refine the way they expressed the over-arching principles, as well as helping the funders to revise their guidance on implementation.

The architects of the plan and leaders of the implementation task force will be at the SMC to present the results of the public feedback exercise, discuss the changes made to the implementation guidance, and answer other questions on Plan S with journalists.

Speakers will include:

Marc Schiltz, President of Science Europe and Secretary General of the Luxembourg National Research Fund

John-Arne Røttingen, Chief Executive of the Research Council of Norway

David Sweeney, Executive Chair of Research England, UKRI

Ashley Farley, Associated Officer of Knowledge & Research Services at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
