the science of fertility preservation

A woman from Edinburgh is the first in the UK to give birth following a transplant of her ovary tissue that had been frozen for 10 years. Experts from the University of Edinburgh came to outline the science of fertility preservation for female and male patients with cancer and other diseases where treatment threatens fertility, and gave details of this service that has been developed to help NHS patients to benefit from recent advances.

The speakers will:

  • Outline the breakthroughs in reproductive medicine that occurred in Edinburgh to pave the way for fertility preservation in girls and young women
  • Outline details of the woman, who has given birth to a healthy baby boy.
  • Explain the challenges of fertility preservation for young boys with cancer before puberty and describe a new clinical service and research programme aimed at overcoming these issues.

Speakers:

Prof. Richard Anderson, Elsie Inglis Professor of Clinical Reproductive Science, MRC Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh

Dr Rod Mitchell, Wellcome Trust Intermediate Clinical Fellow, MRC Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh

Dr Cheryl Dunlop, Clinical Research Fellow, MRC Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh
