the science behind the floods

As flood waters start to subside those affected, politicians and the media start to ask how we can prevent such flooding events in future, could more have been done and what are the longer term solutions. Four of the UK’s leading flooding experts from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology came to the SMC to discuss:

  • River flow histories and trends in the UK
  • Flood forecasting methods
  • Does tree planting make a difference and what might be the impact of upland catchment management in alleviating flooding?’
  • Does climate change have an influence on flooding?
  • Hydrological data – what does it mean? What do we record in the UK?

Speakers:

Prof. Alan Jenkins, Director of Water & Pollution Science and Deputy Director, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH)

Jamie Hannaford, Principal Hydrologist, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH)

Nick Reynard, Science Area Lead for Natural Hazard, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH)

Dr Chris Huntingford, Climate Modeller, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH)
