The increasing burden of multiple illnesses

Rising numbers of people are living with two or more long-term health conditions – known as multimorbidity. Physical and mental health conditions, such as heart disease, dementia, diabetes, HIV and depression, often cluster together in patients, increasing the cost of medical care while reducing quality of life and shortening lifespan.

The Academy of Medical Sciences brought together 17 international health experts, and the latest evidence on multimorbidity, to ask what we really know about how to prevent, treat, and care for people living with multiple long-term health conditions?

Speakers:

Prof Stephen MacMahon FMedSci (Chair of report Steering Group), Principal Director, The George Institute for Global Health

Prof Melanie Davies CBE, Professor of Diabetes Medicine, University of Leicester

Dr Lynne Corner, Director of Engagement at the Newcastle University Institute for Ageing and Faculty of Medical Sciences

Prof Martin Prince, Professor of Epidemiological Psychiatry and Head of Centre for Global Mental and Primary Care Research, King’s College London
