recruiting

Would you like to play an important role in supporting the SMC through a period of change?

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of the team at the Science Media Centre for a six months fixed term contract. The first half of your time will be spent working closely with the Head of Operations, preparing the SMC for changes in data protection legislation and assisting with fundraising. From March, you will then take on the responsibilities of our Press Office Assistant, and help the SMC make, break and react to some of the biggest science stories in the national news.

Operations Assistant (FTC – 6 months)

Location: London (NW1 2BE)

Salary: £22,000 pro rata

Contract dates: January 2018 – June 2018

Application deadline: 10am Wednesday 6th December

Interviews: Thursday 14th December

With the arrival in GDPR in May 2018, we are looking for an extra pair of hands to help us prepare for the changes in legislation. This will mean mostly administrative work; including data entry tasks that must be completed with great attention to detail. You’ll also work on fundraising for the SMC; communicating with funders and keeping our supporter records up to date.

In March, shared parental leave will mean our current Press Office Assistant will become a Press Officer until June 2018. During this time, the Operations Assistant will then take responsibility for the logistics of our busy press office. Duties will include enabling the SMC to efficiently run up to three press briefings a week, providing administrative support for the Chief Executive and being the first port of call for all media enquiries into the SMC.

This is not a press officer’s role, but everything you do will be aimed at supporting the team at the SMC ensure the news media get access to accurate, evidenced-based science when science is in the headlines.
